Through good fortune, instead of going to the beach in the U.S. for my vacation it looks as if I am going to the beach in Portugal! Hooray!
I read all of Tom's posts on this country but am interested in more recommendations, especially since we will be spending the majority of our time in a different area, the Algarve.
Our itinerary for appropriate suggestions:
- four days in Lisbon (two 1/2 days we fly in and out)
- two in Porto
- one in Sintra
- nine days in Algarve
We are staying with my husband's cousin. he and his wife will be working and not always wanting to go out at night so we would like to cook for them. Thus markets and specialties in Algarve (i.e. where do the fisherman come in with their catch?) would be really useful as well. They are not Chowhounds and as of yet speak only limited Portuguese so I can't count on their knowledge.
***also does anyone know a town "Alishte" sp?, that is where we will be staying, it is supposedly very tiny, ten minutes from the beach and close to Albufeira but we can't find it on a map - our relatives can't spell in Portuguese so this is the Ukranian pronunciation of the name - ring any bells with anyone?)
Most likely we will have a car (anyone have opinions as to the necessity of a car in the Algarve area? I think we need one to get around - do we?) and I am trying to convince my husband into a drive to Gibraltar so Spanish places between Portugal and there would be nice recommendations as well.
Pour your knowledge on me everyone! I promise to report back faithfully! (but please don't hold me to Tom's standard! YIKES!)
