Sorry, I should have tagged Northern New England initially. I tried to edit, but couldn't find an option to simply add a tag, hence this repost.
My husband and two kids are headed up to Portland for the weekend. It will be our second visit. We visited last year over the July 4 holiday and I posted a trip report here. http://www.chowhound.com/post/portlan...
We are excited. We got an Airbnb in South Portland just over the bridge. We have a general itinerary but need some help tweaking. What do you think? Please feel free to recommend other kid friendly activities (I know it's not food related, so you can ignore, if not appropriate). Thanks in advance!
Afternoon: We will arrive around 1pm and head right over to the Children's Museum.
Dinner: Early dinner at Slab or Salvage BBQ. We went to Slab last time and loved it. Is Salvage good enough to try something new?
Breakfast: Grab bagels and treats at Scratch Baking Co. which we loved last time
Morning: We plan to go to the train museum and take the narrow gauge railroad with our kids, another repeat activity from last year
Lunch: Duckfat - last time we didn't make it here and plan to get here early, say 11:30 to beat the crowds. Alternatively, we could do Bao Bao Dumpling House, but I'm not sure there will be enough options for the kids there.
During nap: We will sneak out for a bit while the kids are napping (we are bringing help!) and check out the Portland Flea for All and maybe grab coffee at Tandem Coffee on Congress.
After nap: Let the kids run around at Fort Williams Park
Dinner: Date night dinner at Central Provisions. I know that they don't take reservations and we won't be able to get here until 8:30. It's a Sunday night, albeit on a long weekend. Do you think we will get in? We can't get there earlier than this. Backup optinos - Boda or Pai Men Miyake, both of which also don't take reservations. I have a backup reservation at 555, but even though it gets rave reviews, the menu doesn't look all that interesting? Am I just wrong about 555? What other restaurants could I sub in for our date night?
Breakfast: Hot Suppa - another repeat from last time, but we liked it. Should I try something different?
Afternoon: We will explore the Old Port area and shop a bit before heading home.
Lunch: maybe we will grab lunch for the road - could get Slab or Duckfat if we didn't already hit up earlier in the trip?
