Porky's -- The Good, the Bad, and the Chunky

nosh | Apr 19, 200708:19 PM     3

Been meaning to try Porky's because I crave BBQ and I've been intriqued by discussions on this board. Had time to kill today so braved the 405, headed east on Manchester through Inglewood, and found it east of La Brea and just before Prairie, on the north side of the street. Fairly large seating area, but much of the parking layout and staff attention was devoted to the drive-thru. I immediately understood why there have been complaints about service -- they take phone orders for pick-up, requesting a twenty-minute lead, and besides serving up the BBQ a lot of work goes into preparing the boxes and bags with mains, sides, sauces, and accoutrements. When I arrived about 12:30 there were only a couple of others inside, but at least 5 or 6 staff were busily occupied behind the scenes. I decided to use the restroom, nice and clean, to wash up after my drive. When I came out, one person was ahead of me in line but the cashier was having problems with the cash register/computer.

I ordered the pulled-pork sandwich combo, with mac'n'cheese as my side. Ask for the "bubba" medium-spicy sauce. There are signs advertising a piece of Golden Bird chicken with any order for 99-cents, so I added a thigh. And a large coke. $9.85. But they had charged for the sandwich alone, not the combo, and the side added two-bucks instead of one to the sandwich price. And the coke was $1.09 instead of $1.50 (which is the to-go price, i'm informed).

I sit down. Settle in. After a very few minutes a different guy, big and maybe late-twenties, delivers a huge plate of food with a pile of chunky pork in the middle. There is a small container of the mac'n'cheese, but also some dirty rice and a large thin oval of roasted pineapple. I taste the meat -- oh, my. Succulent without being fatty. Tender. Big crispy intensely-flavored crusty squares. The bun is buttered and grilled. I need a LOT more sauce, which comes quickly. I dip some bites and pour onto others. Sometimes I use that tasty bun. Mac'n'cheese superfluous and stringy. Pork is amazing. Portion is huge, and I'm a big eater. Wow! I realize my chicken hasn't come but I'll deal with that later. After uncovering a layer or two of meat and devouring the top bun, I realize the bottom bun has unadvertised cole slaw as well. I take a few more bites and realize I can't eat anymore or the drive home on the 405 will be too risky, depending on traffic.

I go up to the counter and get my chicken wrapped up to go, as well as a plastic bag to pack my leftovers. Porky's -- service issues, yes, but understandable. Gosh, if I were ordering to go I'd check everything three times. Menu should have more combos -- I'd like to try the ribs and brisket. But this is a place where you really do smell the smoke from way outside the parking lot. Portions are larger than advertised. The pulled pork is incredible -- I'm a fan of Baby Blues for pulled pork and this rendition puts theirs to shame.
So order extravagantly, don't expect accuracy, and trust in the generosity, taste, and good vibes.
