Porky's/Golden Bird --Review

debra | Dec 7, 2007 12:31 PM

I visited Porky's last night and ordered a few things to go. Nice place, friendly staff, pretty good q, fantastic side dishes, and very tasty chicken. I was chatting with Earl (owner/manager, I think) and he brought out a sample of a couple of sides I hadn't ordered, for me to try (I'll get to my order in a sec). They make their sides from scratch, and you can tell, they were all very flavorful, beans were smokey and flavorful as well; sweet and tasty yams that still had a bite to them, which I appreciated; some fantastic cabbage with a lot of bacon; and finally a slice of their homemade hot link --not too hot, but tasty.

Ok, our order... Got the "Meaty" Beef Rib Dinner. My god, these were like dinosaur bones. There were 4 (2 with no bone for some reason -- but every piece was enormous). Not necessarily the best beef ribs, but tasty, nothing wrong with em. Also had the pulled pork dinner -- large portion, a tad on the dry side, not sure if there was a rub or not, but the pork could have had a bit more flavor for my taste -- adding some sauce (the meat --to go anyway-- came sauce on the side, which is actually my preference, ribs too), and the pulled pork was actually pretty good. I didn't order coleslaw with it, maybe next time, I dig that combo. The mac & cheese was nice, creamy, but you can see there's cheese in there, not just cheese sauce, very tasty. The greens were well seasoned (and long cooked), with lots of onion and pork. We had to try the chicken too, got the 2 piece (you can pick your favorite two pieces, breast is extra) and biscuit. The chicken was juicy and the crust was very crunchy, a great combo. I was worried because you can see the cooked chicken sitting out, and it took a while to fill my order, but I was glad to see that new chicken was being put out too, and ours was hot and fresh. And that biscuit -- thank god I didn't taste it before I left, or I would have ordered a dozen more -- it was lightly doused with some kind of honey butter... super delish.

To sum up, they really excel at their side dishes -- you can taste the love and effort they put into them, overall they put out a really good meal. I was suprised to see they have a drive thru -- where else can you get drive thru bbq? Their prices are very reasonable, "lunch" meals seemed to run around 7 or 8 bucks, and dinners 10 - 13. Also their website offers a page of coupons... buy one dinner get one free, 2 piece and a biscuit for 99cents.... And IIRC tuesdays is buy one get one free day (not sure if that was for everything, or just dinners??) Anyhow, Porky's is it's own kind of place, I woudn't put it in the same category as Phillips/Tasty Q, but then I wouldn't put in with the likes of Wood Ranch either. It's somewhere in between -- in it's own category. We all gave it a thumbs up.
