Ok, so after waxing poetic about Bayside's Gyro Corner's awesome doner a few weeks ago and having it multiple times, I go in tonight for my medically-induced version of a Monster's Ball (Monday a.m. is major abdominal surgery and this is my last day of solid food...)and I order one to have for din-din tonight.
Anyway, I get the thing home and open it up and take one little taste of the meat and honestly want to wretch. It tastes unbelievably game-y, horse-y(never had horse meat but I imagine this is what it tastes like)just straight out gross. Even the smell is killing me. Husband tastes it and says the same thing. It tastes way off, not in a rancid way but in a whole different kind of animal that is not a pig way.
I'm wondering if it's because they browned the sliced meat on the grill a bit (although I'm fairly certain they'd done that before for me)or they're not using Berkshire Pork anymore. HaHa. Whatever- it wasn't the meal I was hoping for. I ended up having acini d'pepe with swiss chard in fresh chicken broth with my best olive oil swirled in and a showering of pecorino. My stomach thanked me.
Such a weird thing.
