Pnom Phen, Cambodia

South of the Cambodiana Hotel is the Imperial Garden Hotel. Between it and the (under construction) Naga Casino is an interesting area of restaurants and amusements. At least on Friday and Sunday nights, it starts just outside the door of the Imperial Garden where carts lay out mats in an empty space near the river. The carts offer grilled dried squid and fish, "laquered" partridges, cooked eggs, noodles, vegetables, and pork sausages that look like large red beads on a string. If you order those, make sure that they are thoroughly cooked, and please do not ask how I acquired that knowledge.

Just south of the carts (in the direction of the Naga) begins a large area described to me as a teen hangout where you can either sit at slightly raised platforms or sit/lie in hammocks and eat similar foods to the cart offerings, play cards, watch TV, and generally be a teen at any one of dozens of open air restaurants. In the area also are a roller skating rink, an amusement park with rides for kids, a gym, etc. On the river end of this area are two "real" restaurants, one with karaoke and the Srun Heng where we ate seafood wild rice (so-so) and very tasty clams in a concentrated, spicy tamarind sauce. That, rice, a beer, and a soft drink were $5. Most families were eating hot pots, but the two of us didn't want that much food. Do not expect English to be spoken by anyone in these areas.
