It was miserable weather wise this past week in Cincinnati, High 80s w/the humidity in the 80%+ as well.
Yet despite this, I felt a craving for chili, even though it was 10pm and the temp was still a balmy 79 degrees w/the humidity being 95% (at least it felt that way). I was staying w/my brother who lives in the Hyde Park area of Cincinnati. I have passed the Pleasant Ridge Chili shop many times and told myself Im going to try their chili sometime, tonight was the night.
Pleasant Ridge is something out of the 50s. There are canopies over the booths and a very low counter (were people really smaller in the 50s?). I went to the counter and asked for a bowl of chili.
Then came the question, a bowl, 3-way, 4-way, or 5-way. Thats right I forgot it is Cincinnati home of the amorous chili that likes multiple partners. No Ill just have the plain please. I still dont know what all the ways of Cincinnati chili are, I think some are w/beans, w/spaghetti, and ???????????
The chili had a deep spice taste to it, not hot, just a good hearty depth of spice. Almost middle eastern?
I asked what spices are put in and was given the reply that it is the owners recipe and he is the only one who knows. I guess the owner has owned this place forever.
It sure hit the spot; I can recommend the chili at Pleasant Ridge Chili. BTW there is a very cool photo of Muhammad Ali getting in a car. The photographer was across the street from the restaurant so you see the shot of Ali w/the Pleasant Ridge Chili restaurant in the background.
