Plantain Flowers

I was walking by Mazelli's Market on 9th Avenue in NYC today and saw something I did not recognize. They said it was a plantain flower. It was about 10 inches long and 4 - 5 inches in diameter, and looked sort of like a large closed tulip with pointy petals, dark reddish purple in color. Does anyone know what this is, what type of food it is used in, and how it is cooked or eaten?
