Best places for guys to chat in conspiratorial tones

My buddy and I are looking for the best places in Boston/Cambridge/MetroWest to grab some great chow and good beers/drinks but in a setting which lends itself to holding important "guy" conversation without being too intimate of a setting that people will think we're on a date. No white tablecloths - A man's man's restaurant. ;)

We can skip the tobacco juice on the floor...we aren't uncivilized after all...I am thinking maybe of a loungy old-timey tap rooms, where the cigar smoke has mingled into the real wood paneling for years - but often great chow isn't paired with this setting.

Any cuisine will do - but carnivorous instincts again spring to mind...

Any thoughts are appreciated.

(Side note - if you happened to catch the article in the NYT some weeks ago about the rules of the "Man Date?")
