Best Place in LA for $300/couple special dinner?

Susan | Oct 28, 200311:04 AM     13

We are interested in giving a friend/business associate a gift certificate for a special dinner for 2 and are willing to spend $300. We don't live in LA and don't know his tastes extremely well (he's an attorney who has done work for us). We know he and his wife (no kids at home) live in Marina del Ray, although we wouldn't necessarily have to choose a restaurant nearby. They appreciate good food and wine, but we think their tastes run more to the traditional than the esoteric. The only time we've had dinner w/them is when we went to a northern Italian restaurant, which they liked very much. We were considering giving them a gift certificate to either Bastide or the restaurant at the Bel Air hotel, but then reconsidered and thought the best way to get great advice is to ask you - the expert chowhounds in the area! Many thanks in advance!
