Three friends and I had a fabulous meal at Home tonight. The outdoor garden was especially nice in this warm Fall weather, and the service was friendly and efficient.
The kitchen was firing on all cylinders, including the refreshing composed chopped vegetable salad with buttermilk dressing (lightly applied) and bacon, a lentil soup special, & a superb skate in light mustard dressing (a special). The salmon, lamb, and pork chop from the regular menu were almost as good.
But the absolute star of the meal, and the reason I chose Home, were the onion rings. Ever since I traveled to Stony Point to try the onion rings at Annie's, and enjoyed the onion straws at Fireman's of Brooklyn, I've longed for an even better version. I'm happy to report that the O.R.'s at Home are better than ever.
I haven't done the due diligence that AHR has done with fried clams, but until further notice, I hereby declare that Home has the best onion rings in NYC (the breading, though sturdy, flakes off -- in my opinion, breading should not cling together like armor -- and the onion rings themselves taste, of all things, like onions). Can anyone else nominate any other serious contenders?
