This week's circular from Star Market in Salinas has a special on the "Certified Organic All Natural PL Bar Ranch Grass-fed Beef" from Gonzales, CA, just down the road.

I picked up a pound of the ground beef today, priced a buck less than the regular price now, and 20¢ less than Star's usual 95% lean grain-finished beef. We had burgers with it for lunch. I cooked them unseasoned but for some salt and pepper on the surface after turning them in the skillet, so that I could taste the unadulturated flavor of the meat.
Normally I make hamburgers with a fattier grade of regular beef, as 95% has little flavor. The difference I found with PL Bar's product is that it didn't dry out quite as much on the edges, still retaining moisture even in the parts that were cooked well. The flavor is much, well, beefier, tasting of meat rather than fat, with a more satisfying complexity and leaving a much cleaner finish on the palate. The best part though was the near-raw, just warmed through line through the center. There's an uncommon freshness to the taste. I would actually like to have some ground to order to use for steak tartare.
These prices are quite reasonable compared to other grass-fed options out there. And, we're lucky to have access to fresh, and not frozen, beef locally.
The circular also mentions that PL Bar Ranch's owners, Frank and Irene La Macchia, will be doing a tasting in the store on Saturday, May 19, from 10am to 2pm. I won't be in town then, but I hope someone else will give the products a try and report back.
