OK, second visit to Pizzaiolo last night with 4 friends. The highlights:
We got there at 7 pm, sat at a big communal baker's table in the back room, which worked out fine (except for one rather large bill-related glitch, see below).
Food was very good, or at least happily gobbled up. For starters we got a delicious heirloom tomato/mozzarella salad dressed with vinagrette, which we all loved. Also, three crostini, one with cauliflower, one with beet/mozz salad, one with greens. This wasn't particularly great, sorta boring. The greens were quite bitter, cauliflower bleah.
Pizzas- We got a potato/olive/fontaina/rosemary, cherry tomato, rocket salad with speck and parmesan, and margherita with mozzarella. Everyone had their favorites. A couple were a tad soggy in the middle, but nothing horrible. Two of us particularly loved the rocket/speck/parm pizza, which tasted like a delicious ham and cheese sandwich.
For dessert we had nectarine tart, neapolitan (the strawberry sorbet was delicious), and boca negro (a flourless chocolate cake). Everything was very good.
The glitch- our server veered between disinterest, pleasantness, and inexplicable bad attitude. He didn't really seem to have the right personality to be in customer service. It was hard to get his attention, for sure. But worst of all, when we got the bill, it sounded ridiculously high, and sure enough, part of the food of others at our table (not with our party) had been added to the bill to the tune of $60. We pointed it out to him, and he said "oh, yeah, I'll fix that." Took him about 15 minutes to fix the bill, another 15 to come pick up the credit card...paying the bill seemed to take half the evening, and by the end, a few of us were very aggravated.
Anyway, I'm just curious- how would you guys tip in that situation? What would you do (nothing? report to the manager?)? We had a long debate about it, with several different strong opinions.
Assessment- great atmosphere, good food, I definitely recommend it. Just read your bill carefully!
