Pizza in South Orange

Jeremy Osner | Jun 30, 2003 11:13 PM

When we went out to eat dinner tonight we wanted something close and easy. We went to the brand-new South Orange Grille, curious, only to find it is newer than we thought; it has not yet opened. We went to the Afghan restaurant on Irvington Ave only to find it is closed Mondays. Hmm. What about pizza? We haven't tried The Reservoir yet, and have heard from some people that it is good. So we went over there, went inside and headed over to the table in front by the window.

The waitress glared at us and said, "Do you want to sit down?" Well yes, that was the general idea... "The hostess is over there, she'll seat you." So back we go to the hostess, whom we had taken initially for the answering service. We get her attention and five seeming minutes later, she finishes taking an order, tells the next caller to please hold, gets menus and seats us at the table in front by the window.

We sit there cooling our heels, scanning the menu, thinking how overpriced it seems, wondering if the mean waitress is going to come over and offer us water... After a little while Ellen suggests maybe we should leave. She did not have to say it twice, we were out of there in a flash and went next door to Bunny's.

And what a nice change it was! Comfortable room, friendly waitress, reasonable prices (other than prices the two menus were almost oddly similar, unless I am misremembering the even fonts were the same). We shared sweet potato fries (which were fabulous), tomato and basil pizza (great except for the crust, which was floppy), and carrot cake for dessert (nothing special). We'll be going back again.
