This bistro is much more than a pizzeria. In fact, I never noticed pizza on the menu. Locanda looks like in the long ago past the place was once a store in the little, rather picturesque village of Fishkill. A large glass bow front window faces the street and now the interior is slightly hard-edged and moody.
But the food is the main thing. The calamari arrived crisp and hot and was served over linguine. One evening we dined there the perfectly cooked and butterflied veal chop on the bone special was tender and delicious. Another evening we also tried the chicken franchese (sp?) which was delightfully tender and sitting in a puddle of lemon butter sauce, neither too tart or too buttery. We have also sampled the meat balls and spaghetti, the least expensive item I spotted on the menu at $12.50. The pasta was done perfectly, slightly al dente, and the meatballs were tender and tasty. Pasta is offered as a side dish with the main course, and the red sauce is excellent.
Locanda offers a full bar, but does not have a bar or bar stools, so there is no bar crowd. There is also an extensive wine menu and the knowledgeable owner is happy to offer suggestions for wine either by the glass or by the bottle..
