I don't want to sing "Where have all the Flowers Gone" but Recent post giving mention to Pastrami and burgers at SGV icon stands have made me think of my favorite stand The Pit (gone now for 25 years or more a strip mall death). I hear rumors every now and then that the owners moved but no body that I know can say for sure. The Pit was a corner Pastrami stand that existed in El Monte at the corner of E. Garvey Ave., and Santa Anita Ave. It looked like the first The Hat still standing on Valley Blvd. The Pit is one of those places that holds a permanent place in the hart of anyone who stood at the outdoor walk-up counter at midnight and ordered a double-dip Pastrami w/ extra pickle or one of their signature Char Burgers served with mustard, pickles and onion. I think that burger was even better than Thoheys Little Stinko. The Pit was like a community social club. Anyone know what the owners did? Did they relocate / rebuild?
If not then at least we still have the other icons and "The Little Stinko" to look forward to. Beware, we must protect them.
