Just dropped my daughter off after a Yankees game and we stopped and finally tried Pio Pio on Northern and 84th. The place was packed with latin folks who appeared to be adoring the place.
Just got a few things, the ceviche and an order of fried calamari.
The ceviche tasted like they just threw the fish into realemon. No dimension whatsoever beyond the sourness. OK, I've only had ceviche a few times and perhaps this is the authentic incarnation -- but I've loved it the other times. I could only eat 3 or 4 bites of this stuff. yuck.
The calamari with so tough they were impossible to chew without swallowing almost whole.
I saw someone with an order of fried yucca with sausage and I thought I was thinking of that great appetizer at malagueta. No such luck. under done yucca fries and pretty mediocre sausauge. no spicy mayo (like malagueta) to dunk and disguise the overall suckiness.
we left 3 almost full plates of food!! Guess we shoulda got the chicken?
the highlight was watching one waiter twitching and nuerotically sniffing his brains out. he looked so wasted we were both sure he was coked out of his gourd.
