Pine State Biscuits on Schuyler | Eliot - NE Portland

Melanie Wong | Sep 14, 201812:13 PM

Our excursion for Saturday morning was a visit to the year-round farmers market at Portland State University. Our chowpal suggested that we first swing by the nearby branch of Pine State Biscuits to check the line as it might be shorter than at its stand at the market. Good call, at 9:00am the line at the NE Schuyler location was entirely inside with only a few people ahead of us. Though I'd already had a morning bite from Dos Hermanos https://www.chowhound.com/post/dos-he... , I've read that biscuits are a thing in Portland and wanted to try at least one example. We pushed ahead ordering an individual buttermilk biscuit with butter, biscuits and gravy, and the Reggie.

The lofty Reggie, a biscuit sandwich with fried chicken cutlet, bacon and cheese doused in sausage gravy, looked the most impressive and required a fork and knife to tackle at our sidewalk table. The chicken was moist and tender, but the cheese was disappointing, unmelted and low-grade. Best part of this one was the sumptuous sausage gravy.

Biscuits and gravy was the better bet. The buttermilk biscuits verge on the firm side, not the tender, frangible style. But this makes them suited to gravy treatment, and better yet with the deeply meaty gravy served here.

I am curious about the shrimp and grits on the menu . . . anyone tried 'em?
