Picton (easy day trip from T.O.)

For those heading east to Kingston/Thousand Islands, it's well worth a diversion south into Prince Edward County to visit the Tip of the Bay Motor Hotel.

They have a dining room, Daffodils, open throughout the summer season but even off-season you can order from a pretty comprehensive menu in the bar.

The decor is very 'dodgy small town bar' with a tiny triangular dance-floor and disco ball, but with an imaginitive, well-priced and perfectly prepared Italian style menu.

We had the butternut squash soup (thick enough to stand your spoon up in, wonderfully aromatic) since the garlic soup was off, followed by chicken in madeira/mushroom sauce (tender chicken, very rich sauce), seafood medley pasta (beautifully cooked shrimp, scallops, mussels and squid in a very tasty white wine/cream sauce over penne), spinach & green bean salad (think tuna nicoise without the potato or tuna) and a pesto chicken pizza (basically just pesto and chicken on an ultra-thin but still slightly chewy inside crust, very impressive. Obviously someone took Return of the Killer Tomatoes seriously;-)

The food was far and away the best Italian I've had since arriving in T.O., but to be fair I've only eaten in a couple so far.

If anyone can recommend a good Italian, particularly with good Gnocchi, I'd be greatly obliged. If it's anywhere near Yonge & Finch even better!
