phoenikia' 5 days of fantastic food in the Bay Area

phoenikia | Oct 20, 2010 11:03 AM

Day 1
croque monsieur followed by a carmelized banana/dark chocolate mousse dessert at Fleur de Cocoa in Los Gatos

dinner at Cellar Door Cafe in Santa Cruz, operated by Bonny Doon
share plates including padron peppers, eggplant pizza, dry tomato soup, Monterey squid, and potatoes with aioli

Day 2
lunch at Minato in San Jose's Japantown- chicken gyoza, and a nice & fresh, extremely affordable bento box (ginger chicken, tempura, some sashimi for under 10 bucks), but I'll return for sushi on my next visit ;-)
coffee at Roy's Station in Japantown- wish somewhere like this existed where I live.

Day 3
for old time's sake, some See's Candiesfrom a location on Market Street in SF
carnitas taco at Mijita in the Ferry Building
beef tacos, potato taquitos, chicken tacos at a Mexico DF's happy hour- the beef tacos were the winner.
fresh vegetarian spring rolls, and cellophane noodle with dungeness crab at Slanted Door. Also tried a few bites of a lamb main and a prawn main. Couldn't believe how popular this place was. Not sure I ordered well. What would you recommend on a future visit?

Day 4
dinner at Santi in Santa Rosa- mushroom crespelle, some roasted green peppers & fresh olives (not padron peppers- they had an Italian name starting with an F, and are longer peppers, with a similar flavour to padron), Hanger steak and a decadent mocha budino-probably the best meal I've had in Santa Rosa.

Day 5
a cappuccino and a breakfast pizza with mushrooms, bacon and egg at the Downtown Bakery and Creamery in Healdsburg. Great crust, and lots of mushrooms. Wish I had picked up some sticky buns to go.

dorayaki and some mochi balls with sweet soy, and some genmaicha at the Japanese Tea Garden in Golden Gate Park

al pastor burrito & a horchata at Cancun Taqueria on Mission Street in SF

Lucked out with good food on this visit. Looking forward to future visits to the Bay area!
