Thanks to VinnyClams' recommendation, I ate lunch at Pho Saigon today. I had never been to this place and I really enjoyed my meal. The restaurant is quite nice inside, and when I sat down, I was served an ice water and a pot of nice jasmine tea. I tried to order the beef meatball pho, but apparantly I mispronounced the Vietnamese and pointed to the wrong item on the menu, cause 10 minutes later I was served pho with rare steak instead of meatballs. I didn't bother saying anything since I was hungry and the rare steak actually looked quite good (it was also the exact same price, so that was not an issue).
This was not as good as some bowls of pho that I've had in Boston, but it still hit the spot. Broth was flavorful and had several bits of cilantro, and the soup was served with a plate of fresh basil and bean sprouts. My large pho cost $5.95. I ordered two fresh spring rolls 'to go' as I was leaving to bring back home. I had a bite of one, and it was fine but nothing special.
Now I just wish someone would open a Vietnamese place in Northampton or Amherst....argh. Until then, I'll be heading to Springfield or Boston. I'd like to go back to Pho Saigon soon to try more dishes, the menu is quite varied and also inexpensive!
Pho Saigon is at 398 Dickinson St. near the X in Springfield.
