I'm heading to Peru in August to hike the Inca trail and see Macchu Picchu. A search yielded some general recommendations (as much as I would like to try cuy, I'm willing to bet that I will not be permitted to do so in front of my companion), but I wonder if anyone has some recent, specific recommendations about good eating? We'll be in Cuzco for three days before setting off on our camping trip. I'm not a terribly persnickety eater, but I'd also appreciate tips about food safety (i.e. what about water, shellfish, salad). I will be alone in Lima for two days (staying in the Miraflores neighborhood) and while I can decipher enough of a menu to know what's what I don't speak Spanish, so advice about where I'd be comfortable eating alone would be great. Thanks.
