Nearly Perfect Pizza at John's, W 44th Street

We checked out John's Pizzeria on W 44th Street in the Theater District yesterday afternoon. It was pretty empty when we went (around 2:30), though there were a few big groups there. We ordered a large margherita pizza, and I have to say that I liked it better than nearly any pie I've had in Manhattan, including Joe's and Da Nico. Granted, I haven't been to Lombardi's or Patsy's yet, but it was damn good stuff. It had a nicely charred thin crust (I asked for it well-done), delicious sauce, and a chewy mix of cheeses on top. The place itself it very nice, with 2-plus floors of seating in a former church, and a couple of coal ovens on either side of the place.

I'm still not sure whether I like John's as much as Grimaldi's in Brooklyn, but I would probably put it slightly above Di Fara in Midwood (mainly because I'm not a big fan of the excess olive oil on top of Di Fara's pizzas). Can't really go wrong with any of them, though...
