I am bringing four friends to S.F. I lived there about 15 years ago, and I still have my favorite haunts. But I wanted to get some ideas from people with more current knowledge of the city. I have four days, that's twelve meals, from July 3-7, 2002. Here are the parameters:
1. They don't like dim sum (Creeps. I love it, but they won't even try it.)
2. One doesn't like fish, but will go for it if it's spectacular. Just not more than about 3 or 4 seafood meals in total.
3. We will be staying downtown, with no car, so anything we go to should be reachable via Bart, Muni, or a short cab ride. In other words, nothing in San Mateo, Mountain View, Wine Country, etc. And probably only one lunch in Sausalito.
Some places I have been considering are the Slanted Door (never been, but heard great things about it), the Red Herring (had a great, creative dinner there a few months ago), perhaps Swan Oyster Depot, possibly Little Joe's or the Stinking Rose. Is MacArthur Park still any good? Or forget that (I remember it was so-so in 1986)? I heard that Citizen Cake had good desserts, but snooty service. Still, it might be decent for coffee and dessert, as well as Max's Opera Cafe for dessert and the experience.
What would you recommend?
