How do people in the northern suburbs live?

Mike G | Feb 23, 200305:08 PM     32

I had reason to be driving up around Deerfield Road and Milwaukee Ave. or some such place, and it was past lunchtime, and then it was more past lunchtime, and even more, and still I could barely find anywhere to get lunch, I mean not anywhere that met my exalted standards, but any sign that people up there eat at all-- no Dominick's, no Applebee's, no McDonald's, any of that. For that matter, I don't know where they get their clothes dry-cleaned, or withdraw money from an ATM. I drove for miles without even discovering commercial strips of any sort, and often when I did find a lone road house looking place, it was closed on Sunday. Finally I got onto Waukegan and found some modest forms of food vending, but even then not in anywhere near the quantity that I would think would be necessary to feed the vast numbers of people living in places with names like Buffalo Grove and Barrington and Lincolnshire. For instance, I passed a cluster of malls at Waukegan and something or other, the first I had seen in miles, and yet so far as I could tell all there was to eat was a lone Potbelly's. And I find it hard to believe that they all drive 10 miles east to shop and eat in Skokie, week after week.

So how do people survive up there? Are there enough deer roaming their estates that they can live off of them? Are they making monthly Costco trips and living on 5 gallon jars of olives for the entire month? Do they gorge themselves at the Baxter cafeteria during the week, or order Healthy Choice dinners by the case and fill their SubZeros to the brim with them? Does anyone know the habits of these strange tribes and how they live?
