Last week I had a chance to try the revived Penngrove Market that opened this summer with a new ownership team and vision of offering locally sourced produce and products in a full-service grocery store.
The wood-fired oven in the Kitchen can crank out pizza, calzone or piadina. In the refrigerator case, grab-and-go salads and sandwiches, and the hot box has roast chicken and homemade soups at the ready.
For me, the Lucca 12&amp;quot; pizza, $12.99, topped with tomato sauce, mozzarella and Yianni&amp;#39;s sausage. I walked my pie to one of the tables outside on the covered patio.
Marked with some scorching on the rim and upskirt, the very thin crust had well-developed yeasty flavors and was crispy on the edges becoming more chewy toward the center. I added a some red chile pepper flakes to a few slices to spark the mild sausage. This was a nicely done personal size pie.
I also indulged in a luscious homemade vanilla caramel, $1. Rich and buttery, but too squishy. The confection was only cooked to soft ball stage instead of firm ball and the caramel did not pull clean from the paper. Not wanting to waste any of that goodness, I scraped the rest off the wrapper with a spoon.
While the produce section is not large, the vegetables are dewy fresh and locally grown. Paletas from Petaluma's Mariposa creamery are available here, its only retail outlet. One can find everything needed to make dinner here. Penngrove Market is off to a good start.
