Penne with Black Truffle at Tapenade San Diego

I've written before about the 15 buck lunch deal at Tapenade. You get any entree off the menu + soup or salad. You can opt for dessert instead of soup or salad.

Yesterday my wife and I had a particularly good lunch (we try to take advantage of this bargain about once a month). I had a penne with black truffles in a "cream sauce". This was one of the best truffle dishes I've ever had. The entire thing was steeped in truffle flavor with multiple large shavings of high quality black truffle shot through the sauce. It was finished with excellent shaved parmigiano. Wholly lusty and satisfying. I started with a perfectly prepared mesclun salad (with a light shallot viniagrette). Really, an almost unbelievable bargain at $15. The pasta was, however, a special and who knows if it will be back on the menu. You might consider phoning ahead.

My wife started with a butternut squash/carrot/ginger soup. Their soups are always uniformly delicious. She then had a standby--duck confit with potatoes cooked in carmelized onions. Good, tasty, winter fare.

The downside: wines by the glass are a bit pricey. I had a glass of Bordeaux that was nearly the price of my entire lunch. Very occasionally, staff members can be snooty, but not a common occurrence. Also, lunch dessert choices are a bit limited (maybe 4 to choose from). Finally, I wish they offered a cheese course (to have ensured my imminent death from heart disease after the truffle dish).
