Last night thoroughly enjoyed a Malaysian dinner at Penang, West Covina. Apparently not the same ownership as the Soho NYC location I tried last year, but really great if not better than that experience!
Our table orded mango chicken and mango tofu (not on menu). It had a light sweet/sour/spicy sauce with the fresh shreds of mango served in hollowed mango fruit. A lovely foil to the other saltier dishes we ordered. My personal favorite, coconut butter fried shrimp was truly addictive. After gobbling all the shrimp on the plate, the remaining bits of fried coconut batter and shredded lettuce was hard to stop eating. Mee goreng was top notch, rich, and subtly earthy with very silky tasting noodles. Sort of a Malaysian pad thai but more elegant and subtle tasting. As a side dish we ordered fresh spinach stir-fried with garlic (not on menu) which was also very tasty.
I'll definitely be going back. The menu has so many wonderful looking dishes it was hard to decide!
