Peasant mini-report

Dave | May 16, 2005 06:38 PM

So last week I dropped into the downstairs bar of Peasant for a meal for the second time. The space is wonderful and the bartender was very nice. The menu is stupidly written in Italian with no English translation--which probably explains why there is no menu on menupages!

The food was hit-and-miss. The bread/ricotta spread they bring you is great. The octopus appetizer was pretty uninteresting, if tender. We had 2 pastas, one with squid and one with bottarga. The squid pasta was delicious, served with a nice sauce of cherry tomatoes over black linguini. The bottarga pasta was really boring; a simple cream sauce over spaghettini (which was overcooked and clumpy) with a really meager shaving of bottarga on top. If I can do a lot better at home, why should I pay $24 for this?? Yawn.

The pizza our neighbor got looked pretty good. I might try that next visit.
