No peanut sauce in Thailand?

I was told that the ubiquitous peanut sauce that accompanies thai food in the states is an american invention, or more specifically, a vietnamese invention, that americans have decided they like with thai food....is this true? Supposedly the authentic thai peanut garnish would simply be crushed nuts sprinkled over the top, like in pad thai. True, or food snobbery run amuck?
