Was in the neighborhood, so decided to update myself on Indian out west. I hadn't been to Curry Leaf since all the negative reports a couple months back.
Went for buffet lunch. First of all, the buffet was now in the back room and they seem to have extended the restaurant. I also don't ever remember being able to look into the kitchen and see them make naan in the tandoor. I also remember a cash register of some sort up front. But all that is primary cosmetic.
The buffet was smaller than in the past -- fewer items. They were also more boring, just a basic korma, mutter paneer, sambar, a simple aloo dish, and tandoori chicken for mains.
But worse, the flavors weren't vibrant or as "fresh" tasting as before. This wasn't bad Indian, just boring and a bit plain. I'd say the food was a little better than India House, but the same sort of weak flavors. Did they change cooks? Recipes? Ownerse? They're still doing the Sunday special meals.
The naan did look great right out of the tandoor, but it wasn't quite as good by the time it made it to the buffet. I'd love to get one fresh out of the oven.
So, I'd say there's no truly good Indian in Portland right now that I've tried unless today was an anomaly, though I doubt it given the other reports. I'd rather go to Priya in Eugene than anywhere in Portland right now.
Also went to India Direct and tried the chaat shack in the back. Just got an order of masala dosas ($3.50 for two decent sized dosas and a side of soup). Not bad, but not crispy and thin. More homestyle.
