[PDX] Craving great South Indian food (dosas, sambar, etc.)

Freddy | Aug 15, 2005 08:43 PM

Ever since a trip to India several years back, I crave good South Indian food...well, pretty much all the time. Thoren, masala dosa, paper dosa, coconut chutney, uttapam, aviyals...even just talking about it makes my mouth water!

So far I have only found Northern Indian food at Portland restaurants. I know that the SW Swagat does serve a limited number of South Indian specialties, but the one time I went there I wasn't that impressed. Still, if someone told me that I should give them another chance, I would.

I'm hoping for tips on where to go in the greater Portland Metro area for great South Indian. I don't care about decor, just about the food. I know I'm missing some gems, because so many of our tech employees come from Bangalore or elsewhere in the Karnataka area, so I'm sure there's something out there...but I haven't managed to find it (I don't get to SW and beyond much, so I'm sure that's why).

Can anyone enlighten me about where to fill this craving? I cook S. Indian food often, and it tastes pretty good...but I want the real thing.
