Woke up from a dream--realized I had not eaten a local UP backwoods pasty (pronounced "pass--tee") for many years. I was sure that they were still there--even though the mines had shut down long ago. Got on the internet, Googled back to Iron Mountain (close to home): they'd ship me 8 on dry ice air freight. Then I said, "No, this is SOCAL--I can find one here." And I did: Pasty Kitchen, established 1963, off of the 605, just before it gets to the 405, 3641 Katella--on your left, and you can't miss it. I'd already tried the Welsh version at Lucky Baldwin's in Pasadena--which wasn't bad--but I grew up on pasties, and I knew that the UP version was much better.
Even before I entered Pasty Kitchen, I knew I was home: I remembered the smell from the baking pasties at UP shops. They've adapted it a bit for us at SOCAL: in addition to traditional meat and potato cubes, they have chicken and spicy vegetarian pasties--big one and small ones. I only use ketchup, but they supply a gravy. You can eat on picnic tables outside. They have frozen ones to take home--and did I tell you that you can't pay more than $5.00 for a filling nutritious meal?
