Passage to India Bakery & (yum) Mithai Shoppe

Krys Stanley | Feb 2, 200511:59 PM

... and I don't believe I've used the word 'yum' before.

I’m still not sure what I was eating, but it was good. Mithai were colorful little sweets that were like a light fudge in beautiful colors and shapes (see pic below).

Passage to India is a very modern looking shop with display cases of cakes, cookies, Mithai, bread, and hot snacks. The cake slices looked like a mid point between European and Chinese cake. They were not light Asian sponge cake, but they didn’t have the dense look of European cake. The Salt Cookies and Cashew Biscuits look and sound good. Their web site mentions Plum Cake slices which I’m going to look for next time.

I tried the following types of mithai: Chocolate, Cheese/saffron/milk, Pistachio center, Saffron center, Milk with pistachios. Some were brushed with silver. The texture was slightly grainy and the taste was not as sweet as fudge. They were really pleasant and I would buy them again.

It does seem that Lovely Sweet House also in Mountain View might also sells the same thing. Anyone tried both? Do you have a preference?

So what was I eating? The web was no help and confusing. All I found was that mithai indicate several different types of sweet, some of which are sugar confections and some of which are puddings. There were even recipes for chicken mithai which had nothing to do with sweets or puddings.

Hmmm ... between this place and Curry Corner, I might start paying more attention to the posts about Indian food.

I looked around on Chowhound and the only mention of Passage to India gives thumbs down on the vegetarian buffet restaurant in the back.
