Two Park Slope reports: Sugarcane (1st time) and Maria's (again)

Went to Sugarcane (Flatbush Ave. near Fifth Ave./St. Mark's) for the first time, for dinner. The place is very stylish, but I thought the food itself was disappointing. Had coconut shrimp appetizer with a sweet dipping sauce which tasted like "duck sauce," although they called it a "mango chutney". Also had jerk chicken, which was dry and surprisingly bland. I'm curious what other people think of this place. I did a Google search, mostly finding favorable comments about Sugarcane's brunch. Would anyone else like to comment about Sugarcane's dinner, or to recommend any other dishes to try if I go back??

Also went to Maria's Mexican Bistro (Union Street, near Fourth Ave.) for the third time. Damn, I love that place. At the risk of being redundant (yes, I have already posted favorably about Maria's), I really urge you all to try it. The blood orange margarita, the made-to-order guacamole, the red snapper with tomatillo-serrano sauce, and the crepes with cajeta and chocolate were all excellent. (Please note that Maria's is separately-owned and operated from the tiny place next door, Cafe Mexicano, which is owned by the same folks as Pollitos, and which is not nearly as good.) All three people I have dragged there have loved it too....
