We recently had the chance to spend a few days in Paris and here are our reviews:
Septime- We came here for lunch so had a shorter menu. Most of it was great. The one fail was a soup of root vegetables that really tasted like a dressed up version of something you would have eaten during WWI. The wines were ok, but the pairing itself made no sense.
L’Astrance- What a strange meal. The champagne and wines were absolutely superb, one of the best pairings I have had. The service was excellent. But the food… With the exception of 3 dishes, which were excellent and exciting, the rest was actually terrible. My sense is that after losing a Michelin star, Pascal Barbot felt that he needed to reinvent himself so he decided to ‘go to Asia’ with his menu, but in French subtle style. What this means in reality is a coconut soup that has none of the punch of Thai food and a ‘sweet and sour sauce’ so bland that a sauce off the shelf would have been significantly more tasty, to give two examples. I have only regretted spending that kind of money on a meal twice before in my live (at Per Se and at 11 Madison Park). I would strongly advice not going here any time soon.
Arpege- The atmosphere of the place is pretty outdated and stuffy. The wines were very good. When it comes to the food, there was one stunning dish, a beetroot burger, that really was exciting and creative. Much of the rest of the meal was very French, very safe, but beautifully executed. I think this is a meal worth having if you want one quintessentially French meal in your life, of the highest quality. But besides the burger dish, nothing had a punch or real vibrancy.
Comice- Excellent wines, wonderful service, and all in all an excellent meal. There was a stellar cauliflower dish, and the main protein was a superb piece of veal. I highly recommend this place. It is the kind of exciting food you want to be eating in Paris.
Abri- We went on Saturday at 12:30 for the Katsu sandwich. It was yummy, but nothing I would go out of my way for.
Song Heng- Likely the most legit pho I have had outside Hanoi. This place is divine. Simple, but divine.
