I studied this board for months before our trip. We just returned and I wanted to say thanks - mainly to Souphie, as I have to agree with his statement in a previous post that La Regalade and L'Ami Jean are two of the very best bistros in Paris at the moment. We had simply wonderful meals at both places (La Regalade being our favorite). It was simple but so very good - I had a special starter of nothing but a bowl of sauteed mushrooms...I couldn't believe that a bowl of mushrooms could taste so heavenly! I had duck and I can't remember what kind of game fowl my husband had that night (pigeon maybe?) but it was really delicous. Everyone there was nice, we never felt was just overall a great experience. We also really enjoyed our meal at L'Ami Jean, especially my husband's colombe (dove, I think?) I had scallops that were very good...I went with them having overdosed on the game all week. We've never been to Paris in October so my husband was in heaven with all that game on the menu. He had hare, sanglier and every kind of wild fowl you can think of...

We also had very nice meals at A La Biche Au Bois...wild duck that was in a tasty cherry sauce. I had read about A La Biche Au Bois on Chowhound several years ago and hadn't heard anything recently - we thought it was a real bargain and would definitely go there again.

Another fine meal was had at Le Gaigne. Actually our meal there was excellent - we took the full menu of five courses with wine for 54e. The mains were a very delicous roasted cod with chorizo and quail...well presented and very good. The only complaint was that it was late on a Sunday night and we were some of the last diners. It felt kind of "cold" in the room - I can't put my finger on it, except that we got the impression that the chef just wanted to go home (he came out and kind of just stood watching - not a welcoming experience). But the food was stellar, so I'd recommend it and would give it another try.

We also had some great oysters at Wepler (touristy but the oysters were good). Dining at the big starred restaurants just wasn't in the budget this time as this trip was tacked on to a business trip to Toulouse, so our other meals were spent in some neighborhood places with friends (La Marine in the 10th was great). All in all a great time, so thanks again Paris hounds.
