Parchment lids

I read in Thomas Keller's book that he uses them all the time but he doesn't go into detail, so would like some input on anybody who uses them regularly for stews etc., are they worth using and maybe a tip on the easiest way to 'make one' to fit the pot. Many thanks for your info.
