A couple months ago I invited a few friends over to a beach barbecue at a vacation rental in Santa Cruz during a warm spell similar to the one we’re enjoying today. When the friend in Cupertino asked what he could bring, I directed him to India Cash and Carry to get flatbreads (e.g., roti, chapatti, paratha) to go with the tandoori chicken on my menu. I’d keyed into his proximity to Sunnyvale and easy access to Indian purveyors, and didn’t stop to think that this might not be an easy task for a non-chowhound.
He did not show up empty handed and also had a story to tell.
“Well, I found that store. It’s a big store. And probably a great store . . . if you happen to be Indian. I talked to four employees and got four different answers about where to look. Confusing. Couldn’t find anything.”
Lucky for us, one of Cash and Carry’s customers had observed all of what must have been an interesting exchange and stepped in to help. My friend was led over to Kwality Sweets, a small Indian take-out restaurant in the same strip mall, and assisted in placing an order for made-to-order breads.
Wrapped up in foil and packed in multi-layers of bags, the breads were still steaming hot after their trip over the hill to Santa Cruz. We enjoyed the aloo paratha, gobi paratha, and some plain ones.
For what it’s worth, another friend stopped at Cash and Carry on his way over. He found roti and afghani naan in the freezers, as well as chutney for our buffet table.
