help with panzanella

i made a tomato bread salad last night with capers, red onion, garlic, basil, salt, pepper, oil, red wine vinegar, tomatoes, and bread. the flavor was terrific but the bread got soggy really fast. i used non-stale bread, had popped it in the oven to make it crusty. perhaps it was a crustiness issue? i should have left the bread cubes in the oven longer?
