Pantry Raid - Review of Mother's Cupboard, Covina

heckonwheels | May 23, 200511:23 AM

My latest fling has been with Mother's Cupboard in Covina. A real hole-in-the-wall, they specialize in comfort food at reasonable prices. The place is clean, well decorated with an assortment of antiques (the Wedgewood stove being the centerpiece), and staffed by a friendly and competent group of people who take care of the ten tables.

There is a counter for take out but there is waiter service at the tables.

The food. It ranges from really good to delicious. Over the last few weeks, I've tried several items:

Hot Dog, Hebrew National 1/4 pounder. Good, big, filling. It's not in a natural casing so is missing the snap. Nice meaty taste, however. $2.75

Rib-Eye steak. Big steak, I'd say 14 ounces (menu says 12 but it looks bigger), more or less. Broiled, it's a very tasty and tender steak. Very well marbled with a string of fat in every bite. It's served with some creamy mashed potatoes and a small serving of vegetables, the night I had it asparagus and mushrooms were on the menu. $14.95 (sometimes on special for $12.95). It's just like something your mom might serve you on a special dinner night.

Tacos Carbon. Four small soft tacos with your choice of meat. Delicious, made just like king taco used to with the meat, chopped onions, cilantro, and you choice of salsa. I think this was the best meal I had there and only cost $4.00.

Desserts are home made and extremely delicious. Carrot cake made with crushed pineapple is the star attraction...if you see it, order immediately because it goes fast. The fudge and chocolate cake are also very good. Dessert prices range from $1 - $3.50.

Also on the menu, full range of Mexican dishes, chicken cordon blue, ham, shrimp, sandwiches and hamburgers. Most dinner entres are $8-10...the rib-eye is the most expensive thing on the menu.

They don't serve any alcohol but will allow you to bring in a bottle of wine. No corkage fee but they ask that you remember this service with your tip.

Bottom line: real good comfort food at a great price matched with good, friendly service. Mother's Cupboard is located at 624 Shopper's Lane in Covina, just southeast of the intersection of Citrus Ave. & Rowland. Link goes to their entry at San Gabriel Valley Menus.
