Pantry Inventory – App or Spreadsheet suggestions?

jrwing | Mar 30, 201701:47 PM     4

Hi there,
I live with several roommates in a small NYC apartment so it's hard to keep on top of what communal items exist (among oils, vinegars, spices, and herbs). Recently I was cleaning out our pantry area and discovered four completely full bottles of cinnamon, and several other duplicates of various herbs, spices, vinegars, and so on. I think the difficulty comes from not ever really knowing what is in stock at any given time so when we're out someone is bound to just buy a new item that we already have. In my attempt to reduce food waste, I want to come up with a system (not only for roommates but for myself) that allows us to keep tabs on common ingredients we have in stock as well as their expiration dates or when we're running low. I've looked at a few apps for my iPhone but so far none are very impressive, most of them feel clunky or don't work very well. I was thinking I could share a google spreadsheet but then it would be nice to have something that could auto-remind me and have some more extensive features than just a list.

Does anyone have a system, whether spreadsheet or app, that works for you? Let me know your ideas & suggestions. Thank you!
