During our recent visit to Palm Springs we took a walk over to the Street Market that runs on Thursday evenings on Palm Canyon Drive.
Most of what I saw was pretty run of the mill but what really stood out was the Lamb/Beef Shwarma sandwich from Main Street or something like that.
Just follow your nose and you'll find this stand plus there's usually a line. You really can't miss it as the fragrance of the grilling meat just reaches out and grabs you. I had intended on going back to the Indian vendor but when I got a whiff of this shwarma it was all over...
This was totally delish and so much better than any other shwarma I've ever had. The meat was juicy and flavorful, the pita-type bread was tender and the garnish of chopped lettuce and onions topped with a generous glug of tahini was so good. While my sandwich was being constructed, I noticed plastic squeeze bottles of what looked like hot sauce so I asked for some - it wasn't hot (to my taste) but rather it added another layer of flavor.
They also do chicken shawarma that I wanted to try but I'm supposed to be watching my diet (sigh). Tried to talk my DH into it but he had his heart set on a spicy Polish sausage. They also had tabbouli, and a few other side dishes that again I wanted to try but just couldn't add that many calories to an already over-calorified day.
I asked the lady who took my order if they have a restaurant and she said that they don't - they just do this market!
Do yourself a favor - find this place and enjoy! I think it was probably one of the best things I ate all week in PS (a vast culinary waste land IMHO).
Oh, and check out the Indian place too - their food looked and smelled terrific.
