PA Gordon Biersch - Major downhill alert!!!!

pachowhound | Sep 28, 2005 01:53 AM

I've been going to Gordon Biersch in Palo Alto for at least 10 years. It started out great, then went corporate but it's food remained decent.

The last time I was there was a few months ago and between then and now, someone sprinkled bland dust on everything. I can't remember having a worse meal. I ordered the ahi tuna - rare, sashimi style, as I usually do. As we well know, tuna needs to be sashimi grade or something close for that to work. I'm sorry to say, but this was dog food grade at best. The menu said it came with bok choy, as it has for as long as I can remember, but I got these bland stir fried Costco vegies with no flavor. Ditto the Costco lettuce and a few shredded carrots for a salad. No really - Costco lettuce and Trader Joes shredded carrots. That's it.

My dining partner ordered the blackened Mahi sandwich which wasn't blackened. He also ordered the side of Asian vegetables, which was similar to my "bok choy" and just as bland.

Even my rice was noticably bland. It was supposed to be sweet whatever rice, but it must have been Uncle Ben's Minute Rice. There wasn't even a hint of flavor.

The place is so crowded. I can't believe Palo Altans have such bad taste in food. I have to belive that people are coming for the beer, which I am not qualified to rate. However, a word to the wise. If you are a beer aficionado, I suggest you stop at Whole Foods for something decent to eat before heading over to Gordon Biersch. If they are resting on their laurels, it's time they were exposed. With so few meals in a lifetime, I say don't waste one on GB.
