My second time at Ozumo was Saturday night. The first visit a while ago was awesome, so my wife and I decided to go for my birhtday.
The experience was pretty much the same: great food and average service.
The food has a solid Japanese base with great Western touches - it seemed like the best way to make "fusion" food. We started with dohyo: tuna tartare with avocado and tofu cream cheese. We moved on the zeitaku (luxury) of prawns wrapped in shiso with natto and then deep fried. The kinoko (mushroom) salad was also great with a nice touch of warmed dried figs on the side. Awesome!
The sashimi (hirame) was great with a nice western touch of raw sliced sashimi. It went well with the strong soy sauce. Off the robata, we had the mixed vegetable grill. They took bamboo shoots, grilled them and mixed them with pesto. Different - but it made sense. We also had the scallops marinated and then grilled. Perfectly cooked.
All that great food was brought by pretty average service. We were sat in the back of the restaurant and had to ask to be placed out front (plenty of open tables). The server was nice but inexperienced. You could see his nervousness. I know it must be hard to hire good staff, but the prices and quality of the food deserve better. I would almost feel nervous bringing work people here.
All in all, an excellent meal, but I'll wait a while to go back.....
