Oyster safety

Have a dozen oysters languishing in the fridge since New Year's - they are tightly closed, and have been kept cold all along - since I doubt that fish markets sell out all of their shellfish in a day, and I know they used to ship oysters in barrels crosscountry by rail a long time ago, is it too much to expect these will still be safe to eat?
