Oven browned meat?

When browning floured meet in a pan I always manage to burn rather than brown the meat or else it doesn't get cooked enough. Can I just brown it in the oven on a sheet pan either baked or broiled? I know I won't get the fond on in the bottom of the pan but scorched or burnt fond does not make a wonderful sauce, and most of the time it goes from Browning into the slow cooker anyhow.
