Ottawa -- A tale of woe -- but good food is involved

So I just got back from California. I used to live there and went to visit friends. Did a lot of hiking, had a fab time.

Yesterday, I noticed a rash forming on my face. This morning I woke up to red bumps everywhere and my eye was swollen shut. Rash up and down my arms too. Itchy, itchy, itchy. I am so scary looking I can't go out during the day because I'll frighten small children and make grown men cry. Went to the doctor's -- it's poison oak. I have had a severe allergic reaction to it. Am now on mega drugs that make me sleepy and weepy. Waaah!

The food part? My sister, a veritable angel of mercy, dropped by the house with food from Epicuria. A wonderful curry chicken salad, a broccoli salad with mushrooms, red peppers and purple onion (very fresh), and some southwestern beef chili that actually tastes like real chili. And some Belgian bread from Loeb (very dense and delicious), and of course, that ol' sickie standby, ginger ale.

I love my sister.

Often when I get take-away from so-called "gourmet" stores, I end up thinking "Meh. Can't believe I paid that much money for inferiour, tasteless stuff". The items my sister bought from Epicuria were delicious!

The moral of this story? You can never keep a chow down. Even when her face looks like a bog monster's.
