OTTAWA -- Mercado Latino and awesome tacos!

Errant | Jan 19, 200412:27 PM

I've been searching for good tacos -- real tacos for a looong time in Ottawa. Azteca in the Byward Market is quite good though since they renovated their prices have risen quite dramatically. And pleeeeease don't send me to Mexicali Rosas, Fileenas or the Lone Star. Those are not tacos.

However, this past Sunday we discovered a fab place. The Mercado Latino on Montreal Road just west of the Vanier Parkway has THE best tacos. They only serve them on Sundays between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. It's not a restaurant -- you go through the store (featuring products from Central and South America as well as Spain -- great chorizo sausages by the way, and Cola Cao cocoa which is fab)and in the small back room is a very pleasant man who serves you the tacos. You sit at a kitchen table (one!). Last Sunday it was the most succulent pork. Next week it's lamb. Two kinds of sauces -- a golden-coloured jalepeno (a good kick) and a red chipotle (nice and smoky). Fresh onions, cilantro and lime to garnish. Soft, hand-made tacos. Anyway, these are AMAZING and an incredible deal. The three of us had 2 each and the bill came to $12 (not including soft drinks -- obviously no liquor license). It's quite a lovely experience and you feel like you're far away and definitely not in snow-bound Ottawa.

I half-hesitated to write about this place because I don't want it to get too popular, but man, it sure was delicious!
