Ortolan: Why Must It Exist?

sara | Mar 14, 200511:00 AM

Had one of the worst dinners in recent memory Friday night at Ortolan. God, I could tell from the second I walked into that contrived space that I was in trouble. For a space that formal, the service was unpolished and clumsy--at their price points, I expect informed wait people, smooth presentation, and delicious food.

Test tube food was a high end trend that thankfully died out a few years ago in NY--why is Ortolan following in those tired tracks, and why does it present it as something revolutionary? I appreciated the complimentary foams from the chef, but they weren't enough to make up for the $12 field greens starter or the $36 over-salted John Dory entree.

I'm the sucker. I knew upon walking in that Ortolan was nothing more than trendy and would have little to offer besides a rather large bill at the end of the evening.

Never again.
